In this chapter, we learn that the narrator has passed the "cultural exam" , which means that he's learned to read and write in a foreign language. He's also learned to think in terms of story and art, which is something that he didn't learn in school. The narrator is shocked that the man he thought he was with has changed his mind about her. He doesn't think that she's a stray human, but rather a "woman of the hour" . He also thinks that she cheated, and that she must be ashamed of herself for doing it. He wonders why she would do such a thing, and wonders if she would be ashamed if it weren't for the man she thought she was with. She's shocked that he would think of her as his "pet," and wonders why he would cheat on a test that was supposed to be for women. She also wonders if he would have been ashamed of himself if he hadn't passed the test. She wonders if it's better to be shaken up by what happened than to take what he had to say personally.
