In this chapter, we are introduced to Maggie, a young girl who has run away from her family's pet shops in the northern part of the country. She has been rescued by a man who has saved her from wolves. Her father tells her that there are no wolves or cats in the area, and that she is free to go wherever she likes. Maggie tells her father that he was the one who saved her when she was a child, and she is grateful for his kindness. She tells him that on the day that the family of Julius Caesar exacted revenge on humans, life was turned down for her. She looks at the face of the shelter where she was rescued and realizes that she has been taken in by the devil. She begs her father to stop yelling at her and to wake her up.
