In this chapter, Shmoop reveals that he has found a letter in the remains of his mother's house. In the letter, his mother tells him that her three-year-old daughter, Lily, is engaged to a young man from the north. He tells Lily that he is a husband and wife, and that he and her father have grown up together. He asks Lily to give him everything she knows about the engagement between Lily and the north-born boy. Lily refuses, saying that she has no memory of the engagement and that she cannot see through the man's heart. She is horrified to learn that the man has been kidnapped by the queen of pearl spring, who wants him to beheaded.
