Mute in a past life doesn’t necessarily mean he’s gone be mute in his current life. Also, someone could have been essentially mute as a child and started being able to speak as they grew older (which is the case for a number of verbal autistics, for example). There’s also something called selective mutism (which is something of a misnomer bc people with this do not chose to suddenly not be able to speak), so whatever the case may be, it’s not really strange for him at all much older age than in that flashback for him to be talking just fine. I say this as someone who tends to have random verbal shutdowns where I can’t speak, something for which I’ve coined the term demi-verbal for as an autistic person.
