In this chapter, we are introduced to a number of characters who will play important roles in the plot of the novel. For example, we learn that the narrator is a member of the royal family, and that he was born in England. We also learn that he is a prisoner of war who has been executed in France. We are also introduced to some of the characters who are not directly related to the main characters, but who are important to the plot.
