About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that the three monkeys have been killed in an attack on the Obergruppen Fuhrer Heyzig's shop. Everyone is asked to attend a memorial service in his honor, and anyone suspected of being involved in the attack will be severely punished. The Colonel tells the widow that she can't help her husband, since he's too busy talking to the authorities about what to do about the attack. He also tells her that he'll have the technicians killed immediately, since only her husband knew what was going on. He says that the only thing he can do for her husband is to tell the authorities what happened to the technicians, and that's what they're going to do. He tells her not to worry about her daughter, since she's safe out of the way. He adds that they've still been looking for his daughter, Maria, who's hiding in a hiding place beneath his shop. They're also looking for the mole, who was supposed to have been in contact with the mole on the 27th of January near the tram station in the city of Antonescu. He's lying, says the Colonel, because the mole wasn't there, but was a mole named Schroeder.
