The Governess and the Governess's servant, curtea de Arges, are in the middle of a conversation about the whereabouts of rudolf, when they realize that they must get out of the room. They are interrupted by the sound of a gunshot, and they are forced to flee. They do not know where they are, but they do know that they are surrounded by armed men.
