About This Chapter
In this short scene, Roxane reveals that she has seen the signs of the green sickness and knows that she is pregnant. She tells Roxane's father that she will not sell the baby to him. She also tells him that she knows where the baby is from, but she does not want to find out where it is from. She asks Roxane to follow her for questioning, or she will be forced to use magic to find the baby. Roxane tells her father that he has won that murder of his father's heart, and that he is counting on that victory. He tells her that they may not have had to come to the murder of their father, because he has seen signs of her skin, and she has discovered the sickness. He says that the heroes of the war who fought against the dragons are remembered as "peacemakers" rather than "fierce and bloodied" captains of a "glorious age." He tells his father that his mother has given him "common sense" and that it gives her faith in their future. He asks if all this intrigue has to do with his father, who is dying of the sickness, and if it has anything to do at all with his promise to build a castle for them after their honeymoon. He wonders if it was he who saved him, and he asks if he will not be able to escape him. He also asks if it is he who promised to come clean after they were married, and whether it was him who planned to do so. He admits that he did not have any pressing engagements, and says that he will wait until he meets Roxane.
