The narrator returns to his apartment to find that his painting is finished and that he has found a new job. He tells his wife that he wants her to marry him, but she refuses, saying that she only paints part-time and doesn't eat much. The narrator tells her that his wife is a "good boy" and that she should be ashamed of herself for not being a good wife. He asks her if there is anything she has been wanting, and she says that she wants him. She tells him that he can take a break after class, and he promises to send her the completed painting. He promises to wait until the month is over for her to stop working so hard.
