In this chapter, we are introduced to the protagonist, a young woman named Linshi Yu, who is in love with a man named Mr. Xu. She is a modern office worker, financial independent, and outstanding during her work. Her uncle, Mr. Luu, has given her a diamond necklace as a gift. He tells her that she is lying to herself, telling herself that nothing happened, and that she should return to work. He then tells her to help him find her colleague, who has taken a great deal of time to collect the necklace. On another part of the city, a man and his wife are about to be arrested for having an affair, and the protagonist wants to see them too.
