The chapter opens with a description of a vampire-human "pairing party." The narrator introduces the concept of "blood marriage" and explains that vampires and humans are "dependent on each other" for food. The narrator then introduces the protagonist, who is introduced as "his chapero" . The protagonist is a virgin who has just been introduced to the world. He asks the protagonist to sniff at him, and the protagonist sniffs at him as well. When the protagonist realizes that the vampire is none other than him, the protagonist asks him to kiss him.
