In this short scene, Deryn's father, Erik Holm, complains to Paul that his son has not been heard from since he left the hideout. He tells Paul that he is becoming a man and that he will have to kill his sister to get his son back. Paul tells Erik that he has made a contract with him and asks him to hand over the kill count. Erik refuses to listen to his father's pleas and says that he himself is a mercenary. He says that Paul has saved his life and that they could have avoided this if he had just listened to them. Paul says that they are not here to "family" but to "protect" Erik. Erik says that the spirit of tromp-hump-hump is with them and that it will protect him. He asks if there is anything he can do to help.
