Deryn tells the boy that she has found a way to use her powers to teach him about red flags. The boy, however, does not want to learn about the school's red flags because he does not believe in the "hero ethic" that the school teaches. He tells Deryn that he will not be returning to the school because the contract between the school and the boy is non-negotiable. He also tells her that he has been using his powers to kill people, and that he is sorry that his powers are not working.
