In this chapter, we are introduced to a new character, a human child, who has been trapped in a cave by the monster. The child is described as a "sweet aroma of flesh" wrapped in a "thin and tender skin" , with "rich and scrumptious bones" . The creature will soon "eat" the child, and the child wonders what to do with himself now that he is trapped. He can either go back to the cave and wait for the monster to eat him, or he can go through a mirror and see what the monster looks like. The only way he can find out where the creature is is is to throw a rock at the creature, which the creature does not see. The rock is a reminder that the creature has been "swamped" by the cave.
