In this chapter, we are introduced to the youngest son of King Lear. He is called Nemo, and we learn that he is the son of the late King Lear's first wife, the Queen of France. He was born in France, but his mother died when he was a young child. Nemo's father was killed in battle, and his mother was taken prisoner by the French forces. The young son, Nemo, is now the heir to his father's throne, and he has been given the title of King of France by his mother.
