In the middle of the night, Diomedes tells the others that he is on his way to find Kafka, who is hiding on the opposite side of the room from them. He tells them to keep their heads down and not to worry about him. He then goes on to tell them that they should go to Kafka's side, where he is hiding, and stay there for as long as they need to. When he finds Kafka on his side, he is horrified to see him. Diomedeses tells him that he has fought bravely, and that he can only see his shadow, but his smell is unmistakable. He asks why he feels the need to come back and take things from him, when he has so much to lose. He says that he will rip him apart, bit by bit, until they are all dead.
