In this chapter, we are introduced to a number of characters who are very important to the plot of the novel. The first is the doctor, who tells the audience that the patient is in no pain and that his leg is good. The second is the nurse, who tries to comfort the patient. The third is the lawyer, who defends the patient against the charges brought against him. The fourth is the police officer, who warns the patient that he will be arrested if he does not comply with the charges.
