About This Chapter
Dr. Manette thanks the doctor for his good health. He says that even though his daughter is different from the rest of the village, she is no child of misfortune. He tells the doctor that he has come to teach his daughter how to be helpful to the doctor. The doctor says that he found what he was looking for, and he's come to do exactly what he intended. He asks the doctor to come with him, but the doctor tells him that he can leave the village and go with him. He explains that the incense burner in the house has become contaminated because it has a strong reaction when it is touched by people. This incense burner has a similar reaction to the one in the village when it was first used, and the doctor knows that it is the same thing in his daughter's womb when she was born. He believes that the child will someday call down calamity, but he will not be forgiven for his part in it. He thinks that the place where the child was touched is healing
