The wolf's assistant explains that the reason they're going to tell the village chief is to make sure that someone else doesn't go back up the mountain. He's worried that if the villagers find someone else, they won't be able to go back down the mountain, so he's going to have to come up with a reason. The village chief, he says, is waiting to hear the news. The assistant says that they investigated the cave and found that the sound came from a seagull, not a mermaid. The seagulls live on the mountain all the time, the assistant says, so it's not like they can't live on it. He says that he actually predicted that mermaids wouldn't come back to the island, but he didn't think they would. He also says that after they left, the chief found a way to make money off the island. The two men are psyched to be back on the mainland.
