The next morning, Ming-Qing learns that his father has been imprisoned for the crime of being a spy. He tells Ming-Ging that he will file an appeal against the death sentence, and that he is the only member of the family now that he can stand up for his father's right to life. He says that he has already spoken to his mother about the matter, and asks her not to worry about him anymore.
