About This Chapter
This chapter's epigraph comes from the play's opening soliloquy, "Into the Demon King" . It's a quote from Shakespeare's play The Merchant of Venice , in which the king is described as being "born into a demon king" , which is a reference to the fact that the king was born into the demon king. The epigraph goes on to say that if the king had been born into a normal human being, he would have been able to use the healing power of the pant , but because the pant is so weak, he can't do anything with it. He can only use it to break or burn, which means that the pant can only do one thing: "break or burn." The pant is a kind of magic device that allows the pant to move, but it's not as effective as a normal person's body can be. The pant's ability to move is what makes the pant so powerful, but the pant doesn't seem to be able to do anything at all with the power it has. So, the pant has to do one of two things: 1) use the pant as a healing device, or 2) use it as a means of dispelling the power of magic. In other words, it has to be something that can be broken or burned. This is the epigraph we're going to use for the rest of the chapter. The first thing the pant says is that he's been unable to use his pant
