The chapter opens with a "puppet wobble slide" . It's obvious that the narrator is nervous. He's worried that he hasn't done enough to collect his debt. He tells himself that he's fine and that he can go to his apartment in Yotsuya and continue working on his debt collection. The narrator tells us that his son is a "newcomer" , and that the kid's been "surprisingly useful" in helping him collect his debts. He asks the narrator if he could go anywhere in the world, and the narrator says he'd be happy to go anywhere. Then he hears someone yelling to get him on the phone, and he realizes that it's the guy who's trying to get the kid back.
