About This Chapter
Aleksander says that he feels like he's being watched. The signal from the cave has stopped moving, and he feels better off surrendering. He thinks that if the creatures were nothing but "feral creatures without intelligence" , they wouldn't have spared him. He's sure that if they weren't intelligent, they would have killed him. Alek thinks that the creatures are probably apes, but he doesn't know if they're apes or a "de neanderthal" . He also says that the discovery of the creatures will make them famous, and that the supreme soviet will allow foreigners to come and study the mountains. Alek says he'll try to find Igor, who was able to survive for two days in a row despite his injuries. Alek also tells us that another of his dogs is dead, but Alek's one did a good job. He says that Igor's friend, Colonel Kozlov, was sent to war in Afghanistan eight months ago, and Alek died in a surprise attack. Alek is still not sure how he managed to send a signal to the other dog, which helped Anatolievitch find them in the forest. Alek plans to resume his research and find the creatures again.
