About This Chapter
"Asphalt Blues" is the title of this chapter. It's a reference to the lyrics of the song "Sweet Home Alabama" by Jimmie Breslin. The song begins with the narrator complaining about his bad judgment. He tells us that he's been in the business for twenty-five years and has never had a bad decision to make. He's never had to make a decision about anything. He says that he was always afraid of making a wrong decision. He complains about the fact that he has been separated from his wife for five years and that his brothers have found him a foster home. He wants to know when he'll be able to come home. The narrator says that if he dies from a heart attack, it will be his fault. He also complains about how he has never been able to love and be free. He asks if it's possible to be free and still be loved. He claims that he loves his wife and that he will rescue her if he ever sees her again. Then he asks if she's ever seen her dancer again. She says that she has. He then asks if he can even see her again if he wants to. He promises to bring croissants to his place if he even wants to see her. He goes on to say that he knows that he is driving too fast and that it takes a girl to drive a car at night. He adds that he gets a lot of customers who come to drink and order drinks without looking at him. They order a soda and then they order a pint and a fry without even thinking about him. Finally, he says that most of the customers come to get drunk and then go on to order more drinks and eat more food. He doesn't see many of these customers because they don't want to have fun. He thinks that if you're in a marriage and you have been bored for fifteen years, you could meet someone who would take care of you if you let go of your hair and stop worrying about
