In this chapter, the Nurse explains how she came to be a nurse on the ship. She was born on a planet, and she was told to breathe fresh air, to absorb sunlight, and to feel connected to the rest of the world. The only thing that the ship's crew was sure of was that the air would be "pure and fresh." She was also told to scrub the air with sophisticated filters to make it "fresh and pure." She also told the crew to use state-of-the-art solar cells to replicate the sunlight of the homeworld exactly, although she never knew the difference
