The narrator tells us that he's happy with his family. He's surprised that his father isn't worried about him, because he'd assumed that he was worried about his father's health. The narrator then tells us about his affair. He and Tomoe had an affair when they were in college. Tomoe loved him and showered him with love, but he wasn't into Tomoe as much as she wanted him to be. He wanted to change, so that he could love her from his heart, but it was too hard for him. Soon after Tomoe gave birth to Roxane, the narrator realized that he had no idea how to love his wife or his family, and he wanted to be a good father.
