"We're lovers" is the first line of the chapter's epigraph. It's a love letter from a young man to a young woman, and it's the first time we've seen the two of them together. The narrator tells us that he's been thinking a lot about love lately, and he wants to know why he hasn't told him anything. He's worried about what's wrong with the relationship between him and the girl he loves, but he doesn't know how to ask for it. He asks if he can ask for the girl, and the narrator tells him that he can, too, if the girl isn't there yet. He says that he knows exactly how he felt when he was worried about the relationship before, so he can tell that the girl is there, too.
