"We're lovers" is the first line of the play, and it's the first time we've seen the two of them together. It's clear that they're in love, and they've been waiting for each other for a long time. The narrator asks the audience to imagine what it would be like to be in love with someone else, and to imagine that they were waiting in a cafe waiting for someone else to show up. The audience is also given the opportunity to imagine how it would feel to be a woman waiting for a man, and how it might be like a man waiting for his wife.
