In this chapter, the young narrator reflects on his first love affair with Nitta. He feels that he was caught in a love trap, and that he is now in danger of falling in love with someone else. He is worried that he will not be able to control himself, and he wonders if Nitta is worried about him. Nitta, however, is away on business, and while she is gone, she disapproves of her love for him. Three months later, he plans to make chicken rice and papaya with these ingredients.
