He asks his fiancee if she has forgotten something, and she tells him that she has. He tells her that he was told that he would be free to attend college if he could get a good grade. When she asks him if he is worried about the letter, he says that he does not worry about it, as he eats every day. He says that if she had not been nice to him, he would not have been so nice to her.
