About This Chapter
In this chapter, we are introduced to a young woman named Vivi. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Manette. Her father has asked her aunt to buy her a large number of new dresses, but she does not know who has done the damage to them. When she asks why she has done such a thing, she is told that her father wants her to confess and pay off his gambling debts, but that if she does something wrong, she will destroy all of her belongings. She tells her aunt that she already knows who the murderer is, and that she will do as she pleases. She says that she cannot condone such a crime, so she will not bother her aunt. She asks her to go and reflect on her actions, and she tells him that she has only done such an act once, and apologizes for it. He tells her that he knows it was wrong, and asks her why she always gets so lucky. He says that parents have problems too, but they do not know how to find a scapegoat. He asks her if she would like to be taken into the police station. She does not want to go, and he says that he did not make a mistake. He adds that he had only done this one time, and it was a mistake
