About This Chapter
In this short scene, we learn that the bakery's owner, Linda, is struggling to keep her cafe open. She's had a number of break-ups in her life, but none of them have lasted more than a month. Linda's brother, Bob, tries to convince her that she's asking for too much, but she refuses to listen to him. She tells him that she needs to go back to school, and that she plans to buy some sugar from the bakery after school so that she can use it later on. The bakery manager, Mr. Wing, comes to the rescue, telling Linda that their expenses have risen recently, and she should stop by the bakery during the evening when they're free. He tells her that he'll make her some coffee, and then he leaves. He says that they should help Linda because the bakery is a charity, and not because Linda is a hard-working woman, but that she should quit her job at the bakery and go work for Linda at her cafe. Mr. and Mrs. Wing agree that Linda is determined to keep the bakery open.
