About This Chapter
In this short scene, Elmire tells her son to go home and tell his father what has happened. She tells him to hurry and not to make a sound. She reminds him that his daughter's dresses are not being used anymore and that the young lady hates pretty dresses. She asks him to join them on their way to the market, but he refuses, saying that they have to go now. He tells Elmire that he will help her because he has nothing else to do. He says that they will find something else. Elmire shows her the bundles of money that she has hidden in the bundle and tells her to return the knife that the soldier gave her. She warns him that he is going to kill the soldier, but the soldier agrees to let her have the knife. She says that everyone knows that the chief of the police is a thief and that he has caused the havoc caused by the floods in the market. She blames her son for teaching him to hate her.
