About This Chapter
Back at the apartment, the Governess tells her daughter that everything is back to normal. She tells her that she's finally met someone and that she doesn't have to break up with him after two weeks. The Governess remembers a troubled girl she used to see when she was a teenager. The girl's parents moved away, and the girl caused a lot of trouble for them. She was a "bad influence" on her, she says, and that's why she warned her against the girl. She also tells her about her aunt Aurelia, who married a man at the age of twenty-one, and why she wanted to protect her from it. The two of them have a very close relationship, and she says that even though she feels closer to her dead aunt than she does to her, there is a "detail" that makes a big difference between them. He says that he's attracted to women, but that he can't "do much about it" because he has a "passionate emotional guardrail" that keeps him from falling in love.
