took me a few re-readings, but i’m just writing this here to assist others. Mikoto, the popular and kind one, was unable to help her mother hang herself, fleeing and returning to find her mother’s corpse. She fell in love with Asami and wanted to “help” her unlike how she fled when her mother wanted to hang, as she thinks if she didn’t leave, maybe her mother would still be alive. However, Asami was insecure and clumsy, and Mikoto’s cheeriness and kindness didn’t pierce Asami’s guard. And so when Asami would rather die than break up with Mikoto, Mikoto finally “helps” Asami unlike her mother all those years ago. Mikoto must’ve entered a state of shock, as the last thing she can remember is cleaning the knife she used to assist Asami in her suicide, and going about her day as usual without Asami. The audience views the first half of the chapter through Asami’s “ghost” (i.e. the audience’s surrogate) but I think this “ghost” is some manifestation on Mikoto’s part as Asami is dead and gone (and I’d doubt the author would introduce supernatural elements now). It is only when Mikoto returns and thinks to herself as she washes the rest of the dishes, noticing the only washed item (the knife) that Asami was absent from her day. And when Mikoto finds Asami’s bloody corpse in the tub, her saying she “was able to do it this time” is her assisting in Asami’s suicide, unlike her mother’s, whom she fled. I am not filled with hope for a happy ending for Kokoro and Amami. But here’s hoping.
