The story opens with a prologue in which the narrator tells us that today is the day of the burial of King Moussako. The narrator tells the story of how Moussos was killed by a rogue hunter named Moskip. Moskip had been hunting for the king when he was overtaken by the rogue. The rogue killed the king and left behind a trail of blood stones, which were the only markers of the king's identity.
