In this chapter, the children discuss the importance of having an "egg in their heart" . Each child has an egg in his or her heart, and each child feels that he or she has a heart of its own. When the children are alone, they talk about their hearts and how they feel like they have lost track of them. When they hear that the wishing cd has been given away at the school, they wonder if bad things are about to happen. They wonder why they are not able to find the "embryo" that they feel they have been looking for. They also wonder why their diamond egg has rejected them, and they are afraid that it has lost its identity. The children wonder if they will all get an "Amulet Heart" when they grow up, and the narrator tells them that the good thing about them is that they are kind. The narrator tells the children that the experiment with the black diamond was a success, and that people will start to want to become too much.
