The chapter opens with a description of the care level of a caterpillar. It's level 1 for garden care, level 2 for a bowl, level 3 for a blanket, level 4 for a box, and so on. The caterpillar is on the inside of the box, so it doesn't have to be touched by anyone. The butterfly is outside, so the caterpillar can't touch it. The only thing that stops the caterpillar from touching the butterfly is the glass, which makes it look like the caterpillar is stuck inside the box.
