When the narrator arrives at the door, he is surprised to find that his uncle is hiding from him. He tells the uncle that he has waited so long for him, and that he did not expect him to hide. The uncle tells him that his father had always been kind to him, that he had covered all the expenses for his son's education abroad. He then tells the narrator that he does not know what happened to the family doctor that year, because he had been fired before that. When he went to see the doctor, the doctor told him that the aunt had not seen any guests and that she had told him not to come to her house any more. The narrator then goes to the aunt's house to find out what had happened. He finds out that the maid had dismissed the doctor and that the doctor had taken over the family practice. He is not sure who the doctor is, but he does know that he is the uncle's son.
