The chapter opens with a soliloquy about how long it's been since the last time we saw the ghost. It's only been about a few days, but the ghost is still very much alive. He tells his friend that he's lost some of his "matchlessly gorgeous" self, but that he still has the "power of a peach blossom demon" . He's so happy to be alive that he tells her to "posh get up" and "run away" , because she's such a "calambeous girl" that she'll have to figure out a way to get back to her old self. He also tells her that the fox told him that his soul was always in a hairpin, and that he was able to keep it in that form because the fox gathered it there.
