The narrator tells Tan that he'll be staying with him at the hospital for the rest of the novel. He tells Tan about a new medicine that he wants to show him today. Tan tells him that there are three accidents on Tan's apartment that he can see every day. The narrator thanks him for reminding him to be happy, but he doesn't want to be annoyed. He wants to know where his box cutter is, and he asks if Tan is going to a store to buy another one. He also asks if he can take a picture of him with the strawberry sparkling drink he's lined up to buy. Tan says he can't take one because the comment on the post got posted. He says he turned off his phone and wonders what happened to his apartment. He asks if she's depressed, and she says she is. She says she feels sick, and the narrator says he will be his substitute. He's not sure what he meant.
