About This Chapter
The narrator is waiting outside the temple when he hears a knock on the door. It's awanami, the goddess of bubbles, asking him to take care of her. He tells her that he'll be helping her out today, and she's so excited that she wants him to do it. The narrator says he's always wanted to be a priest, and he'd be happy to help her out. He's not sure if it's the right thing to do, but he says he thinks it would be a good idea to help a goddess who's just so eager to help. He asks if the goddess is from the "kamiumi" kami, or the "great spirit of bubbles," and she says she is from a "wanaminokami" , or "the great spirit of the bubbles" . She's married to a man named awanaginaki, and they have a daughter named azumiami. He says he wants to rinse her off with soap, but the bubbles are multiplying, and the wind is blowing them away. He wants to go and call kiri, but kiri won't let him, because they're "partners in crime." The narrator's name is not "okiku," and kiri isn't his real name, so he says, "I'm sorry, but I can't imagine what's going on." He says that kiri is a wonderful person, and that even if they are partners in crime, they are wonderful people.
