The next morning, Mr. Dupuis wakes up. He tells his wife that he has just had a nightmare in which he saw a baby. The baby's eyes are like those of his own, and he and his wife are going to have a baby together. He says that he's been a weak person since he was a child, and that if he had been allowed to stay safe, he would have been able to protect his own baby. He blames himself for not being able to do so, and says he'll make sure that the person who harmed him doesn't harm the baby again. He's not worried about the baby, he says, because it's his fault that he didn't notice the changes in his body earlier. He adds that he wouldn't have stayed by his wife's side if he'd noticed the changes earlier, and would have protected her from any harm. He also says that if the baby had been hurt earlier, he'm sure that he would've stayed by her side and protected her, too. He explains that the baby is gone, because he has been so weak for so long that he couldn't protect it. He claims that he is a useless person, and if he hadn't lived so long, he could have protected the baby
