About This Chapter
In this short scene, a young girl named Amy and her father, the "policeman," are on their way to the post office. Amy tells her father that she's on a "diet" , which means she doesn't eat any real food. She's so hungry that she can't even look at her plate. The policeman tries to cheer her up by telling her that it's "free bread day" and that she should have a "toasted air veggie steak" . Amy's not having any of this. Instead, she eats "green meat," which is "unhealthy" because red meat is "very unhealthy" and "very high in fat." Amy is bummed that she has to eat only "real food," but she still enjoys the "cool diet" of ice cream and chocolate. Amy thinks that being on a diet is like being "self-inflicted pain," which she thinks is what people are talking about when they talk about self-control. She wonders if she'd be happier if she just stopped worrying about her weight and just tried to be "comfortable with who she is."
