"The most important thing" is the title of this chapter's epigraph. It's a quote from Shakespeare's play The Merchant of Venice, in which Shylock says, "The more important things in life, the less important I am." Shylock tells Ganymede that he's glad he came out to see him. He's sorry that he turned him down, but he doesn't blame him for everything that's happened between them. He says that things are all his fault, and that it's his fault that things have gotten so out of hand between them that he can't figure out how to talk to Shylock about it. He also says that his sister, Ginger, has been sick, and he thinks that she's worried about it too. He tells her to come and think of it, because Ginger's sister is also sick, too. Ginger says that she hasn't been able to figure out a way to talk about it to her sister, because she always has to come to her with her problems. She's always rejected him, though, because he said that no one would want to marry her. So, she says, he'd have chosen her over anyone else in the world. She tells him that she wants to tell him something about Ginger, too, but that she has to ask him out first. She says that he asked her out, creaked, and told her everything he knew about her. She asks him to tell her about it, so that she can feel better, but if he tells her wrong, it will make her suffer. He asks her to be by his side, and she says she still wants to be with him, even though she knows that he won't tell her anything about Ginger. She wants to know how she can destroy her world when she has made her the most important person in it.
