About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn more about the mysterious disappearance of Lord Yang. We learn that he was a benefactor of the county, and that he came to investigate the missing people's case. We also learn that the local residents worship the local mountain deity, which is the same one that killed the murderer. The narrator then tells us that two years ago, a young fortune teller named Mister hua told everyone that he could keep bad spirits away, invite good fortune, bless fertility, and become a deity. The fortune teller refused all of the requests of officials, nobles, and others, but one day, he suddenly disappeared. Everyone was speculating about where he was, and some people said he had gone to travel around the world while others claimed he had already learned enough to become a god. Some people also said that the will of heaven had been divulged, while others believed that he had revealed the will himself. A few months after this incident, many people shared a dream in which the fortune teller told them he had ascended to the heavens in the mountain of Quandong and became a god of the mountain. Soon after, the narrator asks the mountain deity to bless her with a child so that she can continue her husband's lineage.
