About This Chapter
The scene opens in the lobby of a hospital, where a young man named Linjing is waiting for his professor to return from a trip abroad. Linjing tells the young man that his left hand is numb after being hit in the head by a gun while playing "neon with guns" . The young man wonders why he should wait until he's done with his work before he can help his professor. He's an intern at the hospital, and he has a lot of work to do. He wants to know why the professor hasn't returned yet. He tells Linjing that the professor is on his way back from the trip abroad, and Linjing asks him where he is going. He says that he was playing "nuke with guns," and that the man forgot his insurance card. The man hit him so hard that his hand was numb. He asks Linjing to wait until his work is done, but Linjing doesn't want to wait any longer, and tells him that he should hurry up and find out what's wrong with the young woman. She's been stabbed in the arm, and she's had a stroke. He warns her not to put her on too much alcohol, because it's going to be dangerous, and that she'll lose a month's worth of shopping for food. He also tells her to hold off on the blood thinners, because there's a chance that it might be hepatic, which is a fancy term for high blood sugar. He adds that the only thing that could cause a stroke is if the patient's blood sugar is too high. He then tells the two young men to come by his office after class to discuss the latest news. They're both too young to be serious, he says, and they can't talk about patients' health. He
