About This Chapter
In this short scene, the young man who has become known as the "Paladin" thanks the man for his hospitality. He is a delivery boy, and he and his friend have formed a bond through the "ritual of consuminity." The two men plan to buy the next stall in the area from the man who works there, and then they will "turn the neighborhood into a dim sum street." The delivery boy tells the man that he has grown attached to the man, but this is only the first step. He tells him that he will have to adjust his sweater, but he will try them again on another day. The man says that the noodles are ready, and there is a friend looking from school who is looking for him. He asks the delivery boy where the noodles have gone, and the man replies that he thought the man's "kind" only existed in "no gains," and that he would not even let his own mother know of it. He says that his "humble abode" is as honored as his "presence." The young man asks the man why he is obsessed with "yi tong" , the "polymathic robot." The man explains that it is a hidden weapon, and that it will be done soon. The young men may not have attained the "peaks of power" of their predecessors, but they are "writers," and they are sworn to protect the people from darkness.
