The chapter opens with a soliloquy by Dr. Manette in which she laments the fact that she has come to the university to find a cure for her son's illness. She is worried that he has been infected with the same disease as her own son, and she is worried about what will happen to him if he does not take immediate action to cure his ailment. She tells him that he should take her to a hospital, where she can be trained to cure him. She also tells Manette that the main machine that Manette installed around the university is still broken, and that they have to destroy it to make it safe for the students and faculty to return to their normal lives. She asks Manette if he would like her to go to the hospital, but he refuses, saying that he wants to save Manette's son. He tells her that they need to open his meridian points and administer the correct amount of qi to him in order to restore his health. He asks where he can find the strontium converter chip that he borrowed from Manette, and Manette says that he did not find it on his shelf, but that he needs it for his experiments.
