In this chapter, Shadow returns to the present to reveal the truth about what happened in the past. He explains that the "marin" was created by the ocean over a hundred years ago, and that it is now the stuff of legend. He wants to convince Heath to "call off whatever he is marin" , but he knows that he will have to go back to the "crystal" to find out what is going on.
